So we do earth movements to harvest every single drop falling on our land. With different measurements like a well, swales, a pond and terraces we have many possibilities to do this.
the well under construction. the gravel protected from the clay with geotextile.
the well almost finished. it’s 10m deep!
pouring gravel around the concrete rings
the terraces below the swlale
the excavator building the dam for harvesting about 400’000l rainwater
ant the swale after the same first rain (about 60mm)
After the earth movement is done, we start with green fertilizing. We seed broad beans, barley and a local wilde bean. Mixing it with soil and sand to give the seeds a good start and to protect it from the sun an getting dry we cover it all with a thin layer of straw.
Bringing straw to the side
and good fertile soil
mixing seed like broad beans and barley with the soil and sand,
seeding the seed mixture and…
cover it with straw
and…
waiting for the rain!
Still waiting for the rain, we startet with the preparation for planting the seedlings and seeded the seeds of the nitrogen fixing trees.
Soon we do the raindance!!!
At the measure
digging the zai-holes and connect them with trenches
mulch the tranches with straw
fill the holes with compost
hammering holes for seeding in the already prepared terraces
the with compost filled holes seeded
a little moon shaped water holding structure for an old almond tree
